Manchester United crash out of the Champions League and they only have themselves to blame

Manchester United

Well, that wasn’t great, was it?

Three days after a significant victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League after a desperately disappointing defeat to Sevilla at Old Trafford.

Few thought that Jose Mourinho’s side could be worse than they were when securing a nervy 0-0 draw against Sevilla in the first leg, but Sevilla were full value for a 2-1 victory against their insipid hosts at Old Trafford.

Substitute Ben Yedder scored twice in the second half for the visitors and it was only after the goals that United sparked into life, with Romelu Lukaku’s goal proving little other than a consolation on what was a disastrous night all round.

Jose Mourinho will face questions for his side’s negative approach and for a selection which saw Marouane Fellaini start instead of Paul Pogba, while barring a couple of exceptions, the players themselves didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory either.

United’s return to the knockout stages of the Champions League was not a long one; the fallout from this one is going to continue for some time yet.
