Matthew Macklin goes from ‘British battler’ to ‘Irishman’ after defeat

He isn’t the first athlete to see his nationality altered after a defeat, but Matthew Macklin has seen first hand what a loss can do for your profile.

He isn’t the first athlete to see his nationality altered after a defeat, but Matthew Macklin has seen first hand what a loss can do for your profile.

Andy Murray is an example that immediately springs to mind, often described as British in the English press and Scottish whenever he suffered defeat, though his impressive form of late has seen that change somewhat.

Macklin suffered a crushing defeat to Gennady Golovkin last night in Connecticut, with the Kazakh WBO middleweight champion ending the fight with a stunning KO in the third round.

Sky Sports were guilty of altering their description after the bout, so until he gets back on the winning trail, Macklin will be known by the English media outlet as an Irishman.
