Understandable but disappointing news for Irish boxing fans…

Sad news for all Irish boxing fans with the news that Matthew Macklin’s fight against Jorge Sebastian Heiiland on August 30 has now been postponed.

The fight was supposed to mark the first time that ‘The Tipperary Tornado’ has fought in Dublin since he beat Rafael Sosa Pintos in 2009.

Understandably, the fight is now off following the shooting of Macklin’s trainer Jamie Moore in Spain.

Moore was shot twice in the legs and is currently recovering in hospital following surgery.

Boxing journalist Kevin Byrne tweeted the disappointing news.

The Macklin bout was expected to act as a warm up for the much anticipated all-Ireland clash with Andy Lee, which has been six years in the making, but those plans are now on the back-burner.

It’s understood that Macklin’s promoters Matchroom are attempting to find another date for his Irish comeback at an even bigger venue.

Macklin has said, “I’m disappointed to have to postpone… but it’s the right thing to do.”

As for Lee, well it’s been rumoured that he is eyeing up a mouthwatering fight against WBC Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
