Max Holloway hits back at “retired” Conor McGregor after Jose Aldo demolition

Serious fighting words…

Conor McGregor has been making quite a few headlines in recent weeks, with many speculating that he may never again step into the octagon.

It seems like Max Holloway might buy into those rumours, after the UFC Featherweight Champion enjoyed a decisive victory over Jose Aldo at UFC 218 and the subject of a fight with McGregor was raised in the post-fight press conference.

Asked if he would agree to a rematch of their August 2013 Boston bout, Holloway put the ball firmly in the Notorious’ court.

“Yeah, for sure,” he said. “Like I said, I’m the champion of my division and I’ve got to keep everything rolling. I’ve got to keep everything going. I’ve got a throne to defend. I’m not going on hiatus. As long as I get contenders, I’m going to fight.

“But if the UFC call me out for that reason, any reason for fighting him, I’ll gladly fight him. If the Conor fight don’t happen, it’s not on my side. I’ll tell you guys right now. It’s not on my side. It’s on their team.”

McGregor was quick to respond, issuing an Instagram post of the beaten and bruised Hawaiian following their clash four years ago.

Holloway has been on a 12-fight win streak since losing to McGregor, and he hasn’t taken this latest barb lying down, taking to Twitter to call the current status of the UFC Lightweight Champion into question.

UFC President Dana White has already poured some cold water on the potential rematch, admitting after last night’s pay-per-view that he’s as in the dark about McGregor’s future as anyone.

“Again, like I said last week to everybody who was in my office, who knows if Conor’s even going to fight again.” he said. “I’m rolling like he’s not… But yeah, if Conor comes back and defends his title, anything is possible.”
