People who love MMA or hate MMA will want to tune into a debate on RTÉ this week

Which camp, if any, are you in?

Conor Heneghan

This is bound to be interesting.

Conor McGregor’s bout with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas this weekend has once again brought mixed martial arts into the spotlight in Ireland.

Both fighters will, of course, have to abide by the laws of the boxing ring, but McGregor’s crossover to the sweet science – a sport he hasn’t practised in quite some time – has prompted a lot of discussion about combat sports and the sharp rise in the popularity of MMA in Ireland in recent years.

With that in mind, in the lead-up to Saturday’s bout in the T-Mobile Arena, RTÉ 2FM will air a debate about MMA that recently took place in a full-sized boxing ring in front of a studio audience in Studio 8 in the RTÉ Radio Centre.

2FM presenter Keith Walsh presented the debate, which featured well-known figures from the sporting world to chat about MMA, Conor McGregor, money and much, much more.

In the blue corner supporting MMA were Paddy ‘The Hooligan’ Holohan, Conor McGregor’s UFC teammate, former UFC Fighter Aisling ‘Ais the Bash’ Daly and Petesy Carroll, a journalist with MMA Fighting.com.

In the red corner, speaking up on the side of boxing, were former Olympic Silver Medallist boxer Kenneth Egan and former Roscommon goalkeeper and current sports commentator Shane Curran.

Plenty of lively debate ensued (you can get a taster below) and if you’d like to catch the debate in full, you can catch the MMA Love/Hate debate on 2FM on Thursday, August 24 at 8pm and it will be available on The Collective on Wednesday, August 23.
