Mount Leinster’s win yesterday cost one bookie €10,000

There are a lot of happy people in Carlow today, and a few wealthier ones too.

There are a lot of happy people in Carlow today, and a few wealthier ones too.

We’re not going to shed any tears about a bookie getting stung. In fact, we are delighted to report that the shock win by Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow over Wexford’s Oulart-The Ballagh resulted in a fair wedge passing back across the counter and into punters’ pockets.

According to Paddy Power this morning, Rangers’ win cost the bookie €10,000 as loyal supporters had placed some very juicy bets on their boys when their odds were stratospheric.

Five punters had a combined €45 on them to win Leinster at a staggering 100/1, but that was before they had even claimed the Carlow title. That bit of very early support netted the unknown five €4,500 this morning.

A number of others lumped on Mount Leinster at 25/1 to win Leinster before their ultimately successful semi-final win over Dublin’s Ballyboden.

With their odds still a tasty 5/1 to win the All-Ireland, we wonder if any of the newly minted punters will be reinvesting today. Maybe more like tomorrow. Or Thursday…
