Mullingar RFC pay tribute to a young rugby star who died on New Year’s Eve

Ben Murray was just 13-years-old when he passed away unexpectedly.

Mullingar Rugby Football Club have paid tribute to young Ben Murray, one of the rising stars of their team who passed away suddenly on New Year’s Eve at the age of just 13.

“As you know we woke New Years day to the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing of one of our rising Young stars,” read a statement from the club.

“Mullingar Rugby Football Club is in mourning at the loss of Ben Murray, aged 13, who sadly passed away unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve.

“On behalf of MRFC and the wider rugby community, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his father Boris, U.14 Team Manager and Mentor, to his mother Alma, his biggest fan, to his younger brother Alfie who plays with our U.10’s and to all his extended family and friends at this very heartbreaking and incomprehensibly sad time.

“Ben joined our club as an U.9 and has excelled ever since.

“He was a multi-talented athlete who stood out whether he was on the Rugby field, the Gaelic pitch or with a hurl in his hand.

“Ben was an amazing young man and it was our pleasure to have him as part of our club.

“He was an integral part of our U.14 squad and played at No. 8 with skill, enthusiasm and leadership way beyond his years.

“A fantastic teammate, a great friend to all and will he be very sadly missed by all had the honour and privilege to know him.

“‘Big Ben’ We will never forget you.”

Leinster Rugby also paid tribute to Ben.
