The 29-year old Australian centre will join the province in time for the start of the next season and add to the midfield options at Anthony Foley’s disposal.

Munster confirmed the acquisition of Smith this morning, with the centre putting pen to paper on a one-year deal with the province, confirming speculation that had been doing the rounds in recent weeks.

Smith will provide an option in an area that has been regarded as something of a problem area for Munster in recent years, an area which will be weakened further by the expected departure of James Downey in the summer.

Smith has made 43 Super Rugby appearances since 2010 and was part of the Brumbies side which tasted victory over the Lions in the summer.

Commenting on the move Smith said: “I’m really looking forward to joining Munster and making the most of the opportunity. Laurie Fisher has always spoken highly about the team and culture. It’s definitely somewhere I want to go and make an impact, working closely with the boys and training hard. I’ve no doubt it will be a great experience and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Munster Rugby CEO Garrett Fitzgerald added: “We look forward to welcoming Andrew when he arrives at the end of his Super 15 commitments with the Brumbies. We are delighted to have secured the services of a player of his calibre for next season.”
