Murray making his mark. Five examples of Conor Murray at his best

Joe Harrington

His meteoric rise has seen him develop into one of the best scrum-halves in the world and we look at the Munster and Ireland man’s best moments…

Murray’s first appearance for Munster came back in 2010 when he came on as a blood sub against Connacht in the Magners League, as the RaboDirect PRO12 was known then. In 2011, he managed to get a good run in the first team and by the end of the season he had established himself as the first-choice scrum half. The rate of his improvement over that time has been remarkable and he’s now one of the key men for the Reds.

The physicality and invention he bring to the Munster number nine jersey is top class and he’s well able to attack the try-line, just like he did here against Racing Metro in the Heineken Cup…

The game that broke all of our hearts was Ireland’s defeat to New Zealand last Autumn. We lost it after a last-minute try from the All Blacks but it was a performance to be proud of, and Murray set us on our way that day…

The Munster man has developed something of a habit of scoring against the All-Blacks and it was he who got Ireland off to the perfect start in what was another heartbreaking defeat to New Zealand in Christchurch in June 2012, with a late Dan Carter drop-goal securing a three-point success for the hosts after some controversial refereeing calls went against the men in green.

He’s a tough man and the hits he’s taken down through the years have been hard, but he always gets up, dusts himself off and gets on with the game. A class act, the same can’t be said for Owen Farrell here…

Murray was named in the British and Irish Lions squad last summer and came off the bench in the second and third test as they went on to clinch their first series win since 1997. Murray scored a try in the warm-up match against Combined Country. What a team move…
