NOSTALGIA: Watch the Ireland segment of the USA 1994 World Cup opening ceremony

Carl Kinsella

What being Irish is all about (sort of).

Irish dancing, the feadóg stáin and a booming voice that shouts “Oireland!” – whoever organised the 1994 World Cup opening ceremony really nailed what it means to be from the aul’ Emerald Isle…

Or at least they did their best. Somebody uploaded a video of the ‘Ireland’ segment of the opening ceremony to the YouTube this morning and it’s a pretty funny watch that might make you want to do a few jigs and reels around your living room (though maybe not).

Check out the video here, and let your imagination drift to what the French have planned for us for their opening ceremony this summer. We imagine it’ll be less dancing and more people on a stage, looking aggrieved about a handball decision that wasn’t given.
