They claim that one of the Norwegian rowers was “too buckled” to compete.

Paul and Gary O’Donovan have won gold medals at the World Rowing Championships.

The Corkmen raced what they called “the best race they’ve ever done together” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on Saturday morning.

The duo were well placed throughout the entirety of the race and took the lead with 500 meters to go.

In second place was the Italian crew, but Team Ireland won it relatively comfortably.

When asked how he felt, a delighted Gary O’Donovan said: “This is my first ever World Championship final and it’s Paul’s 7th World Championship Final. So my record is better than his. I’ve got 100%, he’s got three from seven I think. If I can keep that record up that’d be good.”

Paul, who is more used to this sort of situation reacted slightly more calmly. When asked how he’d feel going up to get the gold medal, he said: “It should be fine altogether.”

Have a look for yourself, it’s gas.

Earlier in the day Emily Hegarty and Aifric Keogh came last in the women’s final at the World Rowing Championships. The two won their semi-final, so will be disappointed with how the final turned out.

Keogh and Hegarty were the first Irish women to qualify for a World Rowing Championship Final.
