Gardaí have confirmed that they are looking into racial abuse suffered by Ireland full-back Cyrus Christie online after Ireland’s loss to Denmark last week.
Yesterday, Christie took to his own Twitter to hit back at the racists with a powerful statement, writing: “It is deeply saddening that racism is still part of the game we all enjoy and love. I strongly believe we need to stand up against these individuals who do not belong in football or any other sport.”

Christie has had the support of his teammates from the beginning of the ordeal, with James McClean drawing attention to the abuse. Now Reading defender Paul McShane has weighed in to criticise those who have attacked Christie.
Writing in support, McShane posted: “To think that even a minority of Irish fans can be racist after the racial abuse that Irish people have had to put up with over the years is sickening to the core.”
“Don’t let these idiots spoil the reputation of the true Irish fans who are the best in the world.”
