“Twenty of us in the red HiAce going down, all in our gear…”

What makes GAA so special is that it brings communities together in a way few other sports can. No matter where it’s based, the local club is only as strong as the community that supports it.

As part of the Dub Club Chronicles with AIG, some of the people who have supported the club from the very beginning told us what the club means to them. Just like every other GAA club, a core of dedicated core of “Barrs” supporters is what keeps the club on its feet.

That was true at the very beginning when their neighbouring clubs thought of them as the “Wild West,” to when they finally got a clubhouse in 1995.

There are always jerseys to be washed, training gear to be bought and lifts to be given to matches far from home. When Naomh Fionnbarra GAA Club was first founded back in 1949, many outsiders thought little of the west Cabra natives.

“We didn’t always have a very good name. I hate to go to a Juvenile game and hear people saying; ‘Ah typical Finbars. They’ll never change.’ It’s very unfair,” club Trustee/Chairperson Elish Langan said.

As proud sponsor of Dublin GAA, AIG Ireland brings you the stories of the grassroots communities that make Dublin GAA such a great organization. They’ve been helping Irish individuals, families & businesses with their insurance needs for over 40 years & are proud sponsors of Dublin GAA.
