PIC: James McClean ran faster than any other player in the Premier League at the weekend

McClean the machine

He must have had his Weetabix on Sunday morning.

We knew James McClean was fast and that pace is one of his biggest assets, but we were still taken aback about a stat from the weekend’s Premier League action about just how speedy he is.

The Derry man was clocked running at 21.8 miles per hour in West Brom’s 1-1 draw with West Ham at the Boleyn Ground, a speed faster than every other player in the league bar none this weekend.

Eden Hazard and Kyle Walker came close to matching McClean’s top speed and the presence of renowned speedsters like Wilfried Zaha and Jamie Vardy on the list shows you the type of company the Irish international is keeping amongst the league’s fastest players.

By way of comparison, Usain Bolt is believed to have clocked approximately 27-28mph in his fastest 100 metre races.

A special round of applause for Sylvain Distin, meanwhile, for reaching a top speed of 21.1 miles per hour just a few weeks short of his 38th birthday.

Way to show the young bucks how to move Sylvain.
