Pic: Kildare footballer goes for the retro socks look in the County Final

We’re not sure if is because of superstition or simply a fashion statement, but Sarsfields player Donnachadh McDonnell sported a slightly different look to his team-mates yesterday.

We’re not sure if is because of superstition or simply a fashion statement, but Sarsfields player Donnachadh McDonnell sported a slightly different look to his team-mates yesterday.

His side fell to Moorefield in the Kildare County Final at St. Conleth’s Park, but wasn’t afraid to give the conventional kit route a bit of a wide berth on the big day.

We all recollect from our underage days of losing socks and wearing the wrong coloured shorts looked slightly out of place with the majority of the team – there was always one – so most players will fondly relate to the below picture.

We thought that at senior level it was almost unheard of to go with some of your own gear, but whether it was a lucky charm, or McDonnell prefers the look of his own socks, the Sarsfields man took to the pitch in a fine pair of light-green socks. Complete with a gaping hole in one for good measure.

We’re told he didn’t wear the green beauties in the semi-final and unfortunately for his sake it couldn’t prevent a Moorefield victory on the day.

Can’t beat a bit of old school.

Hat-tip to Piaras Ó Mídheach on Twitter for sending this our way.
