Pic: The great Ross O’Carroll Kelly honoured by a lovely plaque in Kiely’s… above the urinals in the jacks

We can’t think of a more fitting tribute.

We can’t think of a more fitting tribute.

While the thoughts of Irish fans will be consumed with the fortunes of O’Driscoll, O’Connell and Sexton in the run-up to the start of the Six Nations this weekend, those with a deep knowledge of the game in the capital will be thinking of one that got away, the great Ross O’Carroll Kelly, whose potential, alas, was never fulfilled on the international stage despite his undoubted ability to flourish at that level.

Rather than preparing for the match against Scotland, Rosser was in the well-known surroundings of Kiely’s in Donnybrook this evening, no doubt knocking back a few ‘Kens, to be present at the unveiling of a special plaque in his honour to acknowledge the special place he holds in the heart of a pub inextricably linked with all things Leinster Rugby.

As you can see above, the inscription on the plaque is quite brilliant and both Ross and his alter ego Paul Howard seemed quite chuffed at the honour, which Ross himself described as better than an Ireland cap.

Fair play Rosser, you just might be roysh.

Hat-tip to Marta Harper for sending this one our way
