PIC: The rarely-seen Eric Cantona Mayo jersey was spotted at Croke Park on Sunday

Conor Heneghan

Can anyone identify the owner?

Considering that the GAA hasn’t yet reached a point where the names of inter-county players are splashed across the back of jerseys, we wouldn’t necessarily be encouraging supporters to put the names of famous soccer players there instead.

That said, it’s hard not to have some level of appreciation for the Mayo fan who made the journey to Croke Park on Sunday in a vintage mid-90s Mayo jersey with the name and number of Manchester United legend Eric Cantona on the back.

The fan in question went even further and wore his collar up in a style adapted the fiery Frenchman, who must be one of the few celebrities yet to have joined the ‘Mayo for Sam’ brigade.

Eric, if you’re reading, we’re sure the GAA could sort you for a ticket for the replay on October 1.

Speaking of tickets, the distribution of them for Sunday’s All-Ireland Final was the cause of some consternation on a Dublin GAA fan page earlier today.

UPDATE: We’ve since been informed that the man in the jersey is Anthony Holmes, who, according to his daughter Michelle, wears it to every Mayo game.

Keep an eye out for it again on Saturday week.

Cheers to Davitt Groarke for sending this our way. Got a story for JOE? Hit us up on Facebook or Twitter, send it to our WhatsApp number 087-4001102 or mail [email protected].
