Pic: The Sun went to town on Martin Demichelis on their back page this morning

Talk about kicking a man when he’s down.

Talk about kicking a man when he’s down.

Martin Demichelis will probably have better mornings than he’s going to have this morning.

His team lost 2-0 to Barcelona last night and are probably staring elimination from the Champions League in the face as a result and he was responsible for the major turning point in the game when he gave away a (controversial) penalty and was sent off for a last man tackle on Lionel Messi early in the second half.

For Martin’s sake, we hope he doesn’t pick up a copy of The Sun on his way to the training ground this morning, or at least we hope that if he does, his grasp of English isn’t advanced enough to understand what is implied on the back page.

Under the headline ‘Why pick Demwit?’ the red-top puts the blame on City boss Manuel Pellegrini for picking the Argentine at the heart of the City defence for such a crucial game despite a series of unconvincing displays so far this season.

While it was a huge error on Demichelis’ part, he had actually been playing quite well until his dismissal, a point of view shared by the Manchester City Twitter account, who posted this particularly ill-timed tweet moments before he was given an early bath.

The tweet was hastily deleted afterwards, but if that’s not a jinx we don’t know what is.
