“Eric, you know where I am if you need me and now that you are no longer one of my players, I hope you know you have a friend.”

The man who would go onto be known as ‘The King’ by Manchester United fans had a profound effect on the club.
He helped the Red Devils to win their first league title in 26 years the following May, won a further three titles and two FA Cups and went onto achieve legendary status before a retirement that many deemed premature in August 1997.
To mark the 23rd anniversary of his signing, Manchester United today posted the letter sent to Cantona by Ferguson on his retirement 18 years ago, a letter which was one of a number of correspondence included in the archive section of Fergie’s latest book, Leading.
