Pic: They’re feeding cattle out of the Sam Maguire in north Dublin

We're sure it's not the first time this has happened to the trophy but it might be a first for Dublin.

We’re sure it’s not the first time this has happened to the trophy but it might be a first for Dublin.

Between All-Ireland finals, Sam Maguire and his hurling brother Liam MacCarthy live extraordinary lives. The trophies will visit nearly every GAA club in each victorious county, plus nearly every pub in each successful county too. Add in trips to America and who knows where and if those trophies could talk, they’d have some pretty out there stories to tell.

With that in mind, we’re sure our most famous sporting trophy has definitely endured worse than what you can see in this picture. Sent into us this evening, it shows Sam Maguire being used to feed some cattle. We are told it was taken in Ballyboughal, in north county Dublin.

While we would hope whoever has it now gives it a quick once over with some washing-up liquid before handing it back to the authorities, we’re sure no real harm has been done to the trophy.
