PIC: This 65-year-old Armagh man, in full work clothes, had to play in goal during GAA league game

This JOE once had an experience where a teammate's father stepped in goal; tracky bottoms, hoody and a heavy head on him, as we were desperately short on numbers. JOE reader Jonny McKeever witnessed a very similar incident at a GAA match in Armagh. Ballyhegan Davitts were three men short going into their match with Annaghmore, and with the team needing to field 13 players for the match to go ahead, the manager, Jimmy McKeever, bravely stepped up to the plate. The 65-year-old, still wearing his full work clothes, jumped in goal for his team, even making one important save along the way. Jonny explained to JOE: "It was over 50 years since Jimmy made his first appearance for the club, and almost 23 years since his last", said Jonny. "He pulled off one save then substituted himself for his 18-year-old son once the other lads arrived 20 minutes in! "Great stuff! Only in the GAA!" Annaghmore went on to win by 3-12 to 3-10, but this legendary bit of improvisation won't be forgotten for a while in the club.
