He did an ok job at old Trafford didn’t he?

This JOE vividly remembers the day, moment and minute when Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. It’s not quite as monumental as the ‘Kennedy moment’ but in terms of recent English football history it was pretty sizeable.

It was an odd occasion which we’re sure many of you readers shared because it felt really strange and sad at the same time. We’re sure Howard Webb felt the same way.

28 years ago today though Manchester United announced that Fergie was to be the man to replace Ron Atkinson in the Old Trafford dugout.

There are many that would say his greatest managerial achievements came during his time at Pittodrie though as he helped break the Old Firm’s domestic dominance.

During his time at Aberdeen the Dons won 3 League titles, 4 Scottish Cups and the League Cup during the clubs most sucessful era but Ferguson’s crowning managerial achievement came on May 11, 1983 when his side beat Real Madrid 2-1 to life the Cup Winners’ Cup.

It was no surprise that Manchester United came calling and the rest, as they say, is history.

During his 26 years at Manchester United he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League and two UEFA Champions League titles.
