PIC: Two Offaly school GAA teams stand together to remember clubmate who tragically died last year

What a tremendous gesture

What a tremendous gesture.

The village of Ballinamere in Offaly was plunged into shock in April of last year following the tragic death of Jack Wyer, who was knocked down and killed on the road while walking to visit his grandparents.

Jack, a talented GAA player, attended Ballinamere national school and played at under-age level for Ballinamere/Durrow, a dual club represented by players from schools in the Ballinamere and Durrow parishes.

The club honour Jack’s memory with a memorial tournament and the under-12 team that Jack represented tog out in every game in a Jack Wyer Memorial Jersey (see picture below featuring Jack’s Dad Derek, his Granny, his brother Robbie and sister Megan).

Late last month, Ballinamere went up against Durrow in a schools tournament final in O’Connor Park in Tullamore and before the game, both teams stood together to honour the memory of their late teammate.

Fittingly, Ballinamere ended up winning the game by a point.

A truly fantastic gesture, it’s what the GAA is all about.

Cheers to Ballinamere/Durrow secretary Carina Hevarty for sending this our way. If you have something you would like to share with us, send it to [email protected] or find us on Facebook or Twitter
