The Mayo mafia strikes again.

The Mayo mafia strikes again.

What do Dave Grohl, Paul O’Connell, the Christ the Redeemer statue, Freddie Roach and at least three-quarters of the cast of Home and Away have in common?

As you probably know, at one point or another, the names and objects above have unwittingly (in some cases at least) associated themselves with what is without a doubt the biggest bandwagon in GAA; ‘Mayo for Sam… insert year here’ and the Mayo mafia claimed their latest victim this afternoon.

Norwegian international Morten Gamst Pedersen joined that rather illustrious list of names when he was pictured at Knock Airport holding a t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase ‘Keep Calm and Mayo for Sam’ which we would assume, was handed to him and wasn’t something he had packed in his own luggage.

Pedersen, the former Blackburn winger and one-time Fantasy Football points goldmine, is in the west of Ireland ahead of Rosenberg’s Europa League qualifying round second leg clash with Sligo Rovers tomorrow night and with the Bit O’Red leading 2-1 after last week’s brilliant win in Norway, hopefully he won’t look as smiley when boarding the flight back north later this week.

We can safely say that as long as Mayo don’t go out in the quarter-finals on the Bank Holiday weekend, Pedersen will not be the last relatively well-known person to be seen throwing their support behind the green and red this season… whether they like it or not.
