Richard Newland’s Pineau De Re has won the Grand National under jockey Leighton Aspell.

The 11-year-old came in at odds of 25-1 after beating Balthazar King by five lengths, with joint favourite Double Seven in third and Alvarado fourth.

Only 18 of the 40 horses finished the race, with joint favourite Teaforthree falling at The Chair.

It proved a remarkable success story for the 37-year-old Aspell, who had finished second aboard Supreme Glory in the 2003 Grand National.

Aspell, who at one stage had retired from riding, said: “It’s a wonderful day, this is what we do it for.

“I’ve been watching the National since I was a very young boy.

“As much as you enjoy sharing everyone’s success, you crave a bit too.

“To get a chance to ride in the National is a great thing, and to get on one with a chance is even better.”
