The clash of Limerick and Cork in the Munster final at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday should be pretty special. There is little to choose between the sides and the draw, at 9/1, doesn’t look a bad bet to us.

And it was a draw between the sides in 1987 that allowed one of the most famous hurling goals ever to be scored. A fairly thrilling 3-11 to 3-11 draw in the Munster semi-final of that year meant a replay two weeks later at Semple Stadium.

Cork would run out easy winners in the end, 3-14 to 0-10 but it was one goal, one moment of sheer hurling magic, that means this game lives on in the memory.

A loose ball around midfield is won by Tomas Mulcahy and he flicks it in the general direction of Cork midfielder John Fenton. The Midleton man sizes up the sliotar and absolutely hammers it to the net past Tommy Quaid.

Still majestic to watch, 26 years on…
