Rafael Nadal has won the French Open tennis for a record seventh time.

The Spaniard beat world number one Novak Djokovic in four sets 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 – in a match that was delayed due to rain and only finished this afternoon.

It’s Nadal’s eleventh grand slam title and his seventh French Open title, the victory is especially sweet as Nadal gained revenge for his defeat to Djokovic in the last major the Australian Open, the longest Grand slam final in history.

Defeat for Djokovic means he misses out on becoming the first man in over 40 years to hold all four major titles at once. Djokovic joined Roger Federer, who twice saw his hopes of holding all four trophies ended by Nadal in Roland Garros finals.

After the match Nadal said “It’s an honour but the most important thing is this tournament. It’s unforgettable, one of the most special moments in my career.”

Nadal’s win also nicely tees up Wimbledon which starts later this month as the two men will be joined by Federer and err, Andy Murray as they fight it out for the grass-court title.
