Report: It seems Queen Elizabeth is a highly influential figure in the world of hurling

The Royal is putting the ash in 'Clash of the ash'...

The Royal is putting the ash in ‘Clash of the ash’…

This is a funny one. Apparently The Queen of England is providing Ash for 350,000 hurlers across Ireland every year. She’s not in the delivery trucks or sanding them down in a workshop or anything. But the Irish Sun is reporting that Sandringham forest, which the Queen owns, provides the wood for the hurls.

The paper even spoke to a source: “An independent contractor takes down the ash trees from the estate, and one beneficiary is makers of hurleys in Ireland. The Royal family are happy the GAA is a beneficiary of the wood.”

Michael Flannery is a hurley manufacturer and he added his expert knowledge: “The Queen owns a lot of forestry and it’s being imported in here but also people are going over there to cut down the wood.” Thanks for that insight, Michael.

You’d never know, maybe we’ll see the Queen back in GAA HQ this summer but we guess if she really wants to see it, she can switch on Sky Sports 3.
