Rob Kearney has another dig at Shane Ross as he announces new contract

The Minister for Sport and all. You couldn’t script it.

Rob Kearney took to Instagram today to express his delight at news that he’s signed on with Leinster Rugby and the IRFU until November 2019.

He follows in the footsteps of fellow Ireland rugby player Rory Best, who made the same announcement on Tuesday morning, confirming that the Irish captain will continue to play for province and country until the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019.

In his Instagram post, Kearney couldn’t resist getting a joke in at the expense of Minister for Sport Shane Ross, who confused him for his brother Dave at the weekend.

In a tweet that has been since deleted, the Minister wrote alongside a picture of Rob Kearney and Johnny Sexton: “Congratulations and welcome home this evening to superstars Johnny Sexton and Dave Kearney.”

Kearney, seeing the funny side, replied with his own personal dig at Ross.

Announcing his new contract on Tuesday afternoon, the Louth native wrote about his delight with the renewal, signing off with a quote made famous by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and a reference to Ross’ gaffe at the weekend.

Well played…
