“In Irish terms, it’s a bit like Munster and Leinster merging.” Ronan O’Gara speaks out on the Racing-Stade merger

Racing 92 and Stade Francais will be merged into one club… that’s happening.

The announcement made earlier this week was unexpected and not exactly popular in some parts. The Stade Francais players have already threatened to strike over it.

The proposed move to pool the two teams’ resources together to form a Top 14 ‘superclub’ is set to be discussed at an emergency meeting of France’s Ligue Nationale de Rugby on Friday.

This news obviously directly impacts on Ronan O’Gara, who is employed by Racing as a defence coach. The Ireland and Munster legend explained on SportsJOE LIVE that, ‘in Irish terms, it’s a bit like Munster and Leinster merging.”

He added that he has been asked by Laurent Labit and Laurent Travers to stay on at the merged club, but nothing will be decided until Friday.

“As of now, there are two coaches. Everything else is undecided at the moment. The two coaches have said they want me on the ticket.”
