Well played… very well played.
We’re still on a high from the game. James McClean can drink for free in any pub in Ireland for the rest of his days. Above all, we assume he now has free entry into Coppers for life after that.
But there were good performances all over the pitch. Robbie Brady; tireless. Shane Duffy; rock. Darren Randolph; solid. Harry Arter; elegant (that dummy). David Meyler; enforcer.
We could go on and on, but the result was the important thing, and Ireland got it.
James McClean, you absolute dancer. How about that step over from Harry Arter?!? #WALIRL #RTEsoccer pic.twitter.com/75hDzigE9L

But there was a great moment (if you’re an Irish fan) after the game, where RTÉ proved their pure and utter mischievousness.
Below is how we imagine the scenario played out.
The game had just ended and RTÉ were cutting together their closing montage for the show.
The discussion turns to what music they’ll use over the scenes from the game. We imagine plenty were discussed; some classics from the Dubliners, U2 or any number of other Irish songs.
The final decision comes in, Tom Jones. The ultimate insult after defeating Wales in their own patch and dumping them out of the World Cup.
What a shower of messers…
What a result! Ireland are going to the World Cup play-offs thanks to 1-0 win away to Wales. #walroi #rtesoccer pic.twitter.com/d6HgGZPOAX
