Rugby World Cup 2023

“If we’re successful, it will be the most exciting event ever to take place on this island.”

Tomorrow could prove to be a very big day in the history of Irish sport as a delegation from Ireland’s bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup head to London to make a final presentation to the World Rugby Council.

Former Irish captain Brian O’Driscoll will be part of the delegation – as will Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Irish Rugby CEO Philip Browne and Irish women’s captain Niamh Briggs – making a presentation of no more than 30 minutes to make the case for Ireland getting the big gig in six years’ time.

Ahead of the visit to London, a promotional video has been released featuring all four names mentioned above, as well as a number of other key stakeholders, including representatives from the GAA and An Garda Síochána, and it doesn’t half create a buzz of what it will be like if we end up hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

After the presentations by the three nations bidding for the event – France and South Africa have also registered interest – the bids will be considered by the Rugby World Cup Technical Review Group, who will publish their recommendations on October 31.

Two weeks’ later, in London on November 15, the World Rugby Council will reveal the winning bid.

Take three minutes to watch the video below and dare to dream that it might be us…
