Sad news as caddie passes away during the final round of the Madeira Open in Portugal

Iain MacGregor, caddie for Alastair Forsyth, collapsed at the ninth hole and could not be saved.

The caddie for Scottish golfer Alastair Forsyth has passed away during play at the Madeira Open tournament on Sunday.

Zimbabwean Iain MacGregor died despite receiving the best efforts of medical personnel, with play resuming later in the day.

“Everyone at the European Tour extends our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Ian at this time,” the organisation said.

“Following consultation with the players and caddies involved, it has been decided that play should continue and the tournament should finish,” added the European Tour in their statement.

“Play resumed at 18:00 local time.

“All administration will be taken care of by the European Tour and we will help in any way possible.”

MacGregor was said to have collapsed at the ninth hole at the Santo da Serra course, having suffered a heart attack.
