The former Manchester United manager was hospitalised earlier today.

Alex Ferguson has been rushed to hospital to undergo emergency surgery (5 May).

An ambulance was called to the 76-year-old’s home this morning, at which stage he was described as being seriously ill.

Manchester United have since issued a statement confirming that the former manager suffered a brain haemorrhage, saying:

“Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.

“His family request privacy in this matter.”
