Six Nations: 5 players who stood out during match week 4

JOE

An Irish man, a Scotsman and an English man walk into a bar. They are all victors, but only the English man is holding the Six Nations trophy.

That was the story of the weekend’s rugby, but which players stood out above the rest?

Maro Itoje – England

Itoje’s skill and composure far outweigh his experience. His steal on an early Welsh lineout gave the English the platform and the belief to push on.

At 21-years-old, many pundits have called Itoje ‘one for the future’. They’re wrong. He is one for the now.

Owen Farrell – England

The perfect return from the tee and a superb performance from open play sees Farrell included in our list of this week’s best players.

At times his temper can get the better of him, but that passion may be the fuel that’s driving him to be a better player – whether it be at 10 or 12.

Taulupe Faletau – Wales

The Welsh showed great spirit to fight back at the death and nobody epitomised that will to win as much as Faletau.

He got over for a late try and almost made it another day to forget for his childhood friend and number 8 counterpart, Billy Vunipola.

Stuart Hogg – Scotland

A 54-metre penalty, Scotland’s first try and an assist so audacious it would make Sonny Bill Williams blush; it certainly wasn’t a bad day at the office for Hogg.

He is consistently Scotland’s best performer and despite playing with a mid-table side, he has been one of the players of the tournament.

Josh van der Flier – Ireland

He constantly made yardage by searching for the weakest points in a flimsy Italian defense. His carrying has been a massive asset to Ireland throughout the tournament and he is only going to get better as he gains more test match experience.
