Ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland semi final between Donegal and Dublin, we’re looking back at two of our favourite players from both counties and the Dublin man we’ve chosen is Jason Sherlock…

Jason Sherlock burst onto the scene with Dublin as a 19-year-old and the impact he made in the 1995 season was a major factor in their All-Ireland success. Sherlock played for the Dubs for 15 years and over that time was consistently one of the most dangerous forwards in the game.

Any sport needs people who make you get up off your seat and whether you were a Dublin fan or not, Jason certainly did that. He was a pleasure to watch and we are clearly big fans so here are six reasons JOE loves Jason Sherlock.

The fresh-faced youngster turned into a fresh-faced young adult and into a fresh-faced grown man. Jayo never aged…

Sherlock was also a brilliant basketball and soccer player, he had trials with Liverpool and played League of Ireland with UCD and Shamrock Rovers but GAA was always his true love…

The sock goal. It’s one of the most iconic GAA moments of the last 20 years. It led to young lads all over the country blasting footballs in their socks. Sore feet but spectacular…

He is a brilliant pundit and was an accomplished TV presenter. With the “young people’s magazine sports show” Rapid on his CV, Jayo had it all. (There’s no footage of Rapid on Youtube, by request of Jayo and Kathryn Thomas we’d imagine, but click here for a small clip).

The Jason Sherlock fan song was, and still is, the greatest GAA player chant we’ve ever heard. The lyrics “Boom, boom, boom, let me hear you say Jayo, Jayo” are Phil Coulter-esque and it helps if you play this as the backing track…

Longevity. Despite the boyish looks, Jayo did actually age just like the rest of us. He kept playing for Dublin up until 2010 and finished with his club St. Oliver Plunkett’s in 2013. What a servant.

Dublin are littered with top class forwards nowadays and we reckon Sherlock would add nicely to the blend that Jim Gavin has created in the capital. They’ve a tough test on Sunday with Donegal waiting for them; it throws in at 3.30pm at Croke Park.

Ahead of the big game, and because we love Donegal and Dublin equally, of course, make sure to check out our six reasons JOE loves Donegal football legend Jim McGuinness too.
