So there was a spy spotted watching Kerry training from a tree on Tuesday night

Because for some people, the phrase ‘behind closed doors’ is obviously not an order but a challenge.

When Eamonn Fitzmaurice controversially decided last year that it was about time the Kerry footballers held their training sessions behind closed doors he probably expected opposition – which he got – but he probably never envisaged a situation where there would be spies watching his charges train from one of the trees surrounding Fitzgerald Stadium.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner today, that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night, with a Kerry source confirming to the paper that a spy was discovered in a large palm tree overlooking the pitch on the uncovered stand side of Fitzgerald Stadium near the dressing rooms.

The report goes on to detail that the spy was discovered when team management heard rustling from the tree in question and that when a member of the backroom team went over to investigate, the Jason Bourne-wannabe fled the scene.

The unidentified spy is obviously new to the espionage game, however, because he left an identification document behind and although he is understood to be living in Killarney, he is not believed to be a Kerry native. The Kerry County Board, perhaps understandably not wanting to cause a hoopla ahead of the big game on Sunday, have been keeping schtum on the matter.

One’s natural inclination is to suggest that the spy is in some way associated with the Donegal camp but there has been absolutely no evidence to support that theory so far.

However, unsubstantiated reports have suggested that new video evidence has emerged that might be able to shed some light on the spy’s identity…
