After being a rumoured, and jokey, Lions call-up yesterday, Gareth Bale may yet be strutting his stuff at Thomond Park later this year.

We are just about to begin the pre-season friendly time of the year, when all sorts of clubs will be popping over here to gear up for the season. The big one is the Dublin Decider between Liverpool and Celtic at Aviva Stadium but Limerick FC are very close to pulling off a pretty sweet game for Thomond Park.

According to a report in the Limerick Leader,  the League of Ireland club are hoping to get Tottenham Hotspur over for a game in September.

The paper carries quotes from Limerick CEO John Sullivan, who didn’t name the club in question but the paper believe that Spurs are the side who may be headed to the mid-west.

“We are talking with a Premier League club at the moment. We are confident enough that both parties can come to an agreement.

“What we are waiting for now is what dates will be available. With European games, a lot of our domestic fixtures could move over the next month. As it is we don’t know when the Derry City game is going to happen.

“We have to make sure we can marry up a date which suits Thomond Park and the team we are talking to. Hopefully, we can do something there. But we are what I would call a good stage in discussions at the moment.”

Last season 20,000 turned up to watch Limerick play Man City and we would expect Spurs to attract a similar, if not slightly larger, crowd if the game does go ahead.
