The 9 best moments in Irish sport EVER

JOE

Sport brings our small island together in a way nothing else can…

And Dairygold’s new ‘Make a Minute’ campaign is all about coming together to make time for the good stuff, whether that be hugging a loved one or reliving a minute of sporting brilliance from one of our heroes.

So why not take that extra minute to relive some of the best moments in the history of Irish sport.

Here’s our pick.

A BOD is born (2000)

Ireland had not won in Paris since 1978, but Brian O’Driscoll doesn’t care much for tradition.

The moment he breaks through the French line is nothing short of sheer genius.

Katie Taylor’s gold (2012)

The whole country stopped to watch this warrior from Bray take on the world and win during the London 2012 Olympics.

The key moment here is when the boxing is over and Katie is announced as the winner. It’s a minute that no Irish sporting fan will ever forget.

Packie’s save (1990)

“The big man from Donegal has set it up for the victory.”

Possibly the most famous minute in Irish commentary, until…

Robbie Brady’s goal (2016)

We said ‘make a minute for the good stuff’ but that doesn’t seem to do this goal justice. This is more like ‘making a minute for the amazing stuff’!

Sonia’s silver in Sydney (2000)

Sonia O’Sullivan came agonisingly close to the gold. Nonetheless, we were unbelievably proud of the girl from Cobh when she picked up silver.

McCoy’s 4000th win (2013)

It’s impossible not to admire Tony McCoy’s achievements and this was probably the greatest of the lot.

The last few seconds alone show an athlete who refuses to quit.

McIlroy win the US Open (2011)

To achieve what Rory McIlroy has achieved at such a young age is a testament to the golfer’s determination and ambition, as well as his god-given talent.

This win put him on the map and he’s now regarded as the world’s most talented golfer.

ROG’s drop goal (2009)

“Drop at goal, grand slam at stake.”

61 years of hurt erased in one beautiful moment.

Pádraig Harrington wins his first major (2007)

Harrington was there or thereabouts for many years, but it was only in 2007 that he won his first major.

An amazing moment in Irish sport and one we will never forget.
