If it clashes with Midnight Mass, there’ll be trouble.
Given everything that’s gone on to date, we shouldn’t really be surprised by any news that comes out in relation to the chaotic mess that is Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
Still, there was a pretty sizeable reaction this morning when it was revealed that the tournament is likely to take place in November and December, with the final potentially being played on December 23, two days before Christmas.
Understandably, a lot of the reaction was damning and FIFA came in for the type of criticism that they really should be getting used to at this stage, but there was plenty of craic to be had as well.
Here’s a sample of both types of reaction from the Twittersphere this morning.
A winter World Cup in Qatar: far more sensible than a summer WC in Qatar, but still an absurd proposal.

Qatar is a country of 1.8m people, mostly expats. Oppressive labour laws. Totally unsuitable World Cup host. Timing shouldn't be the issue.

Can't believe the World Cup final will clash with the Tipperary football final.

In fairness, there won't be much traffic on O'Connell Street to disrupt the open-top bus with the World Cup on Christmas Day, 2022.

Blatter: World Cup in Qatar
Everyone:Too hot
Blatter: In Winter
Everyone: How will it work?
Blatter: F*ck knows, I'll be retired by then— Paddy Power (@paddypower) February 24, 2015
Whole Qatar thing clearly a farce, but worth remembering a summer WC messes up loads of leagues all over the world.

Somewhere, the designer of Qatar's artificial clouds quietly and sadly lays down their pencil, a single tear rolling down their cheek.

A World Cup final on Dec 23rd? It's a pity that for most people I know that clashes with the annual Xmas 12 pubs!! #whatareyouthinkingfifa
