This Dutch coach is not a fan of American Football, calling it “a sport that sucks”

Take that, Barack!

Tony Cuddihy

Dutch speedskating coach Jillert Anema has some very strong views on why the United States have not secured a medal on the Sochi ovals – their love of American Football.

“You have a lot of attention for foolish sport, like American football,” Anema told CNBC on Friday. “You waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, in a sport where it’s meant to kill each other, to injure each other.

“… (The U.S.) is so narrow-minded, and you waste a lot of good talent in a sport that sucks.”

This is the U.S.’s first medal shutout in the long-track events since 1984, with Barack Obama agreeing to set aside millions in funding to get to the bottom of his country’s failures in speedskating.*

Anema, at least from a winter sports point of view, knows what he’s ranting about. The Dutch have won 21 of the country’s 22 medals in Sochi on the ovals.

“I think that the gold medal in speedskating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22,” he added.

“You’ll never win 22 in basketball.”

*Not strictly true.
