Darragh Walsh from The Neale was killed in an accident on Thursday night just two weeks after he arrived in Qatar.

The world of GAA was plunged into mourning yesterday as news reached Ireland about the tragic death of Mayo man Darragh Walsh.

The 22-year-old from The Neale was killed when the taxi he was a passenger in crashed in Qatar on Thursday. Darragh came from a prominent GAA family in Mayo, with his father Gerry the chairman of The Neale GAA club.

Darragh had spent the last year working in London, and after a brief visit home, went to the Middle East a fortnight ago to work there.

In a statement on The Neale’s Facebook page, the club expressed their grief at the news.

“Crushingly bad news this evening. The club is devastated with the news of the tragic death of Darragh Walsh. Simply hard to believe. We will all miss you. Truly only the good die young. Our thoughts are with Gerry and Miriam and his brothers and sisters and his extended family and friends.”

A minute’s silence was held before yesterday’s Connacht senior club final in memory of Darragh and the Department of Foreign Affairs are assisting the family at this difficult time.
