Ireland secured a momentous victory over the All-Blacks in Chicago’s Soldier Field this afternoon after a tense and breathless second half.
The Kiwis clawed their way back into the game after trailing 25-8 at half-time, tries from TJ Perenara and Ben Smith taking them back within touching distance of Joe Schmidt’s men.
However, Ireland saw out the game with particularly good effort from Simon Zebo, trojan work from Conor Murray (who kicked a pivotal penalty after Johnny Sexton took a knock) and a killing blow from Robbie Henshaw who put down a try just four minutes from time.
Joey Carbery missed scored the conversion before missing a penalty but he won’t mind too much, having survived his Ireland debut in a real baptism of fire that he’ll be telling people about for decades — as if they’d forget.
The match ended 40-29 to Ireland, giving them a historic victory over the All-Blacks that no Irish rugby fan will forget in a hurry.
Genuinely cannot believe it. Foley would be absolutely thrilled. More of a tribute to him than the figure 8 to begin with. #IREvNZL
