The Reds crashed out in a penalty shootout against Besiktas.
With the tie locked at 1-1 after extra-time at the Ataturk Stadium – scene of arguably Liverpool greatest European triumph ten years ago – Dejan Lovren was not the man Liverpool fans expected to see taking their final penalty.
Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Joe Allen had all successfully scored their spot-kicks but, with Besiktas failing to make a mistake and leading 5-4 – the hapless Croatian stepped up and skied his effort.
While certain Twitter users applauded Lovren for stepping up, many were unforgiving.
Fair play to Lovren for stepping up. But God knows why others aren’t asking to take one ahead of him. Oh well. Eases fixture congestion.

Before people start giving Dejan Lovren abuse. At least he had balls to step up to take a penalty. Don't kill his #LFC career off yet.

Lovren does a little dance on the spot, drops the ball down, it bobbles a bit. He never looked like scoring, or that he wanted to take that.
