This has been on the cards.
There’s no denying that Wayne Rooney has played a monumental in all of Man United’s many successes since joining the club in 2004 – but it’s just as hard to deny that the club captain has looked more than a touch off the pace for the last season or so.
United had lost three games on the bounce before beating League One side Northampton midweek, and Rooney’s performance in the most recent defeat to Watford could only be described as abject.
United fans were certainly beginning to wonder what Rooney would have to do to get dropped. Today, ahead of United’s clash with champions Leicester City, their prayers have been answered as Wazza starts the game on the bench – with Lingard, Mata and Herrera all coming in to the side, a clear suggestion that Mourinho is yet to find his best team.
Unsurprisingly, United fans have been in jubilant form.
