Thanks to the likes of Ronan O’Gara and Rob Kearney we’ve been treated to some pretty great drop goals over the years, but this effort from Wigan Warriors’ Pat Richards is up there with the best of them.

The Warriors took on St. Helen’s in a Super League clash last night and with the game delicately poised 14-14 midway through the second half, Richards decided to take a pot-shot at goal from a seemingly impossible position on the left touchline almost 50 yards from goal. Richards couldn’t have connected with the ball much sweeter than he did and the ball sailed between the posts and over the crossbar with yards to spare for arguably one of the greatest drop goals the sport has seen, which must have come as a small consolation for Richards as Wigan ended up losing 22-16. It’s just a pity it was only worth the one point, isn’t it? Video via YouTube/Fernando Munchie
