And you thought that romance in the GAA was dead…
It may well have escaped your attention at the time, but eagle-eyed viewers tuning into highlights of Mayo’s narrow victory over Roscommon on The Sunday Game the other night will have spotted a tender moment between Mayo match-winner Andy Moran and Roscommon corner-back Seanie McDermott after the game.
Commiserating with McDermott and Roscommon goalkeeper Darren O’Malley after the final whistle, Moran gave the corner-back (whom he knows well having played with him in Sligo IT) a little peck on the cheek, which might have been a little continental but as a sporting gesture, it was great to see such respect between rival players after a hard battle at Hyde Park.
Having spotted it at the time, YouTube user Paul Jennings decided to increase the romantic aspect of the whole exchange by slowing the footage down and adding some Celine Dion in the background and though plenty of GAA folk wouldn’t be emotional by nature, it’s hard not to be moved by this all the same.
A beautiful, beautiful moment.
