We love old GAA clips here. Who doesn't? While modern GAA, even at club level, is now a fairly slick product, wind the clock back a few decades and everything from the players to the jerseys were a little bit looser.
So it was with great joy that we opened a message from Damien Hanily on Facebook this afternoon. Damien sent us a clip from the 1993 North Mayo Junior football final between Killala and Ballycastle and it is only wonderful.
Killala, in the blue, make more than few fairly poor attempts to score before the ball lands in the arms of Eddie Walsh. Walsh turns and swings and puts the ball yards wide from five yards out. The commentary is up to the standard we expect in these sorts of videos too.
Our Mayo sources tell us that the Ballycastle keeper in this clip is John Madden, who was in nets for the Mayo senior team that lost the 1996 All Ireland final. They have a fierce memory for things like that in Mayo.
