Connacht’s new signing James So’oialo has shown not only has he family pedigree, he has a sharp eye for the posts from the kicking tee.

Connacht today announced the capture of the Samoan international who has been picked by his country for their upcoming summer tour to South Africa where they will face Scotland, Italy and the Golden Lions.

The 24-year-old utility back has signed for Connacht Rugby from Wellington Norths on a two-year deal and his two siblings were formidable players in their day. Back-rower Rodney has 62 caps for the All Blacks to his name while his other brother Steven also represented Samao as well as stellar career with Harlequins.

New coach Pat Lam has worked with So’oialo and believes he will add to the quality already at the Sportsground, especially when it comes to goal-kicking.

“James is a superb utility back who can play all positions but half back. He can kick goals from up to 60 metres out and I’m sure with the Galway wind, we will see him kick from even further out,” Lam told the Connacht website.

“To have someone in our squad with so much versatility and who can kick goals from that distance is a real weapon in our armoury.”

And he isn’t exaggerating So’oialo’s prowess in front of goals. Check out this footage of him in action for his country against Canada last year at full-back, showing his sublime ability from the tee.

The weather in the clip looks fairly wet and miserable, which is just as well given the climate conditions he is likely to face in the West next season.

If he can bang them over in the wind and rain he is likely to encounter, then he will merely add to his growing reputation as a kicker of notable quality.
