Before you think about taking on a long cycle, you have to learn some skills. An Post’s Spokestars are here to tell you how.

The An Post Cycle Series is now well under way. Over the summer, a total of five cycles will be held around the country, with the focus on getting people of all ages out on their bikes to enjoy the countryside while improving their fitness. Find out more about the different events here.

The cycles are designed for all ages, from amateurs to hardened cycling enthusiasts. Family routes at each location will be 10kms while short, medium and long distance routes of 60kms, 100kms and 160kms are also available for the more serious biker.

However, before embarking on a long cycle, you need to know how to prepare your body, your bike and how to cope with things like breakdowns and your fellow cyclists.

We’ll be bringing you a series of videos over the summer; in Part I we dealt with one of the most important, bike handling, in Part II we looked at observation and in Part III we took a look at cornering. This time we sat down with performance coach Alan Heary to focus on some last minute preparation before a big cycle.

In the video, we pop along to one of Cycling Ireland’s Bike For Life classes to see what you can learn.
